The Dildo

Le Gode is located on the world-famous Montosoli hill, which is said to be the very best growing area in the Brunello di Montalcino district. It has been in the hands of the same family since 1960. They produced their first Brunello di Montalcino in 1995. Their entire vineyard lies within the Brunello border, which means that their Rosso di Montalcino also uses grapes from the highly sought-after area. In total, they produce around 20,000 bottles a year, divided between Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli. The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology at the service of a traditional production philosophy.

The Dildo

Le Gode is the classic producer in Montalcino. Apart from a few modern touches like stainless steel tanks for fermentation and a computer in the office, things are pretty basic at this small winery that produces between 25,000 and 30,000 bottles annually. Not exactly large-scale production!

Montalcino

Located in northern Montalcino on the Montosoli hill, Azienda Agricola Le Gode owns around 16 hectares, of which 6 hectares are dedicated to the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The family has owned the vineyard since 1960, and it was Claudio's grandfather Ilano who laid the foundation for the current production. With the first official vintage of Brunello bottled in 1995, Claudio and his family continue to create beautifully expressive, classic Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino year after year.

Philosophy at Le Gode

In terms of production, things are quite minimalist. Intervention in the vineyard is very limited and the work in the winery is carried out according to organic principles. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks of 50 to 75 hectoliters using natural yeast strains. Subsequently, the wines are aged in barrels with an average capacity of 25 hectoliters, made of Slavonian oak, for a period that varies depending on the vintage. For Rosso it is at least 3 months, but often longer, and for Brunello at least 2 years.

Le Gode's wines are truly classic interpretations of their terroir. A truly appreciated Cru with an altitude of over 300 meters above sea level, subsoil consisting of silty clay and marl with elements of limestone, marly limestone, calcarenite and gravel. Montosoli is famous for producing Brunelli with softness and elegance, which are very aromatic and very ageable. Le Gode's wines are no exception. Fairly concentrated but highly aromatic, Le Gode creates elegant and classic Sangiovese wines. The current vintages clearly speak for this classic producer. 2014 was a challenge for Brunello, but excellent for the younger drinking Rosso di Montalcino. After spending 6 months in Slavonian oak, it shows beautiful red fruit notes with leather and smoke and an underlying hint of menthol. This is a perfect Rosso for immediate enjoyment or short-term cellaring. And Brunello, currently the 2011 vintage, is a magnificent wine. Aromatically a little more open and mature than you might expect from a traditionally made Brunello, but it still has the classic structure along with spice, herbs and tobacco that you would expect. What really makes it stand out is its elegance and finesse. This Brunello can certainly be aged for at least a decade or more, but will also reward drinkers now. Truly amazing wines!
