Angelo Gaja

Gaja wine, represented by the renowned Angelo Gaja, stands as a monument in the international wine world – not only in Italy and Piedmont. He is famous as the ‘King of Barbaresco’ and one of the most influential winemakers, especially in the development of Piedmontese wines made from Nebbiolo. Angelo Gaja took over the family winery in 1961 from his father, Giovanni Gaja. When Angelo took over, it was a completely different reality for Gaja and Piedmont was in. In the 60s, the cold climate in Piedmont meant that only 5 out of 10 vintages were good. In several vintages, Nebbiolo grapes struggled to ripen properly and gain enough sugar and concentration to achieve the desired alcohol content and flavor. Over 40 years later, the situation is different. At Gaja, almost only good vintages are experienced. Since 1995 until today – there have only been problems in 2002 and 2003.
