Nestled in the heart of Tuscany is a hidden gem that has been producing some of the world’s finest wines for over 600 years. Tenuta IL Greppo is a family-owned winery that has been passed down from generation to generation, each adding their own touch to the vineyards and cellars. The history of this winery begins in the 14th century, when the Biondi-Santi family first began planting vines on the hillsides surrounding their property. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century that Clemente Santi, a descendant of the original owners, began experimenting with Sangiovese grapes and created what would become known as Brunello di Montalcino. Since then, Tenuta IL Greppo has become synonymous with quality and excellence in winemaking. The vineyards are carefully tended by hand, with each grape carefully selected for its ripeness and flavor profile. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for several years before being bottled and released to the public. What sets Tenuta IL Greppo apart from other wineries is their commitment to tradition and innovation. While they still use traditional winemaking methods, they are not afraid to experiment with new techniques and technologies to improve their wines. But perhaps the most surprising turning point in this story came in 2010 when Jacopo Biondi Santi decided to leave his family winery and start his own business. Many thought he was crazy to leave such a prestigious name behind, but Jacopo knew he wanted to create something unique and different. And so he founded Podere Le Ripi, a biodynamic winery just a few miles away from Tenuta IL Greppo. Today, both wineries continue to produce exceptional wines that showcase the best of the Tuscan terroir.
