Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate is a high-profile, critically acclaimed winery based in the Oakville AVA in Napa Valley, California. The winery is located in the hills above Martha’s Vineyard just north of the city of Napa itself. Their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine is one of California’s most sought-after wines, regularly commanding high end prices. The winery was founded in 1984 by real estate developer William Harlan, who apprenticed at Merryvale winery and Meadowood lodge before purchasing 97 acres of land in the Oakville hills. Around 16 hectares of this was cleared for vineyards – to be planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, but also Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The classic varieties also found in Bordeaux, and not without reason. Harlan Estate’s first commercial vintage was released in 1996 at the then expensive price of $65 per bottle. Since then, the estate has cemented itself as a cult wine producer, with five vintages achieving 100 points from Robert Parker. Harlan hasn’t looked back since, the winery hit on a style that the world’s wine critics loved and today produces Harlan Estate and the second wine The Maiden. Today, Bill Harlan’s son William has taken over the entire business.
