The Winery
The 21 hectares of Tenuta di Castellaro are located on the volcanic island of Lipari, north of Sicily. The wild allure of this magnetic, unspoiled and remote corner of the world captivated Massimo Lentsch and Stefania Frattolillo, who quickly decided to start a winery in the area. The goal is to produce wines that represent the pure essence of their terroir and to preserve, enhance, and make the area known for its magnificent beauty, while also protecting the traditions of the area.
The two entrepreneurs decided to continue the millennia-old tradition of producing wines from native varieties that have been present on the island for many centuries. Together with wine specialists and consultants from the renowned nursery, Pépinières Guillaume, which has specialized in high-quality wine since 1895, they selected a plethora of Malvasia delle Lipari and Corinto Nero vines which they planted in the vineyards. Subsequently, Tenuta di Castellaro also became the largest grower of the local grape Corinto Nero.
The Work
Work in the vineyard is carried out with great care, and everything in the field is done by hand. The stages of ripening of the grapes are monitored vine by vine, and the harvest dates are carefully selected based on what they wish to achieve for the final result of the individual products.
The Soil
The volcanic soil where the vines grow is a resource of incomparable importance. Volcanic soil varies not only by the origin of the volcano but especially by the age of the material produced during eruptions and the time it has taken to solidify. The soil is rich in microelements and minerals.
