The first harvest is a late greenish harvest. Alcoholic fermentation begins without the addition of yeast and continues at 13°/15°C. The second harvest is a saignée which is made the same day as it is harvested. Both harvests are then blended and fermentation continues at 13°/15°C.

Producenten Poggerino

Poggerino is a small organic and biodynamic winery located in Radda in Chianti in Tuscany. It is one of the coolest Chianti Classico areas, so the wines from Poggerino have a classic Radda freshness.

Everything is grown with respect for and in harmony with nature and the environment. It hasn’t been an easy choice, but as they say “definitely the right one”. No pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used.

The people behind
The Poggerino winery is a small winery that only cultivates 12 hectares of vineyards. It is run by Piero and Benedetta Lanza. Piero is the oenologist and takes care of the magic in the wine cellar, but he can’t help but lend a hand in the fields either. Benedetta Lanza takes care of the Bed & Breakfast and does everything in her power to make visitors feel as comfortable as possible. In addition to Piero and Benedetta, Poggerino also employs Stefano Cutrupi and John Spratt. Stefano takes care of the daily maintenance of Poggerino’s large vegetable garden and also helps Piero in the vineyards and cellar. He is also the proud holder of the title of Italian Pumpkin Champion. He holds the record for the largest pumpkin grown in Italy at 849kg! John is the sales manager, but he also takes care of the office in the B&B as well as checking in guests, so if you are considering a trip to Tuscany, staying at Poggerino is highly recommended. The vineyards
Poggerino’s 12 hectares of vineyards are located on southwestern slopes at an altitude of 400-500 meters. The soil of the farm’s terroir is extremely well-draining and mineral-rich due to the local “galestro” soil, a type of shale that characterizes certain areas of Tuscany. The soil creates perfect conditions for growing Sangiovese, ensuring a balance between fruit and tannins. Sangiovese is grown on 11 of the estate’s 12 hectares, with around 20 different clones of Sangiovese, all of which contribute to different shades of Sangiovese. The oldest vines were planted around 1973 and are used for their Riserva. The last hectare is planted with Merlot, which is used for Primamateria. In cases where a vineyard needs to be replanted, the land is left fallow for a number of years (7-9 years), with repeated sowings of legumes. This investment revitalizes the soil and ensures vine plants of the right quality to maintain Poggerino’s extremely high quality.
