Nervi Conterno Gattinara 2020 is an elegant example of Nebbiolo, aged for 36 months in large oak barrels and further matured in bottle for precision and finesse. Nervi Conterno uses large barrels of between 750 liters and 7600 liters, as well as large cement barrels. Only natural yeast from their own fields is used. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously after the alcoholic fermentation. For Valferana and Molsino, wooden fermentation vats are used. As standard, Nervi ages these wines for three years, two of which are in barrels, and in recognition of the viney structure, Nervi chooses to age their Gattinara for a minimum of three years in barrels and for a full four years for Valferana and Molsino.

Roberto Conterno is the grandson of Giacomo Conterno and the current owner of the house Giacomo Conterno. Today, Conterno stands for some of the best of what Piedmont can deliver when it comes to quality wine at a high level. Conterno is a beacon for Barolo and Babarresco wines. They make wine here as they always have, and Roberto Giacomo has no intention of changing that. Roberto Giacomo does not use temperature control during fermentation, the wine ferments alone under the given conditions and there is no use of modern techniques or aids. The wine is then aged in large “botti” barrels for up to 7 years. Barbera d´Alba Cascina Francia ferments for 2-3 weeks and then ages for 2 years in large barrels. Barolo Cascina Francia ferments for 3-4 weeks and then ages for 4 years in large barrels. The star of Conterno is Monfortino. This wine is a tribute to Ciacomo’s hometown Monforre d´Alba. The Nebbiolo grapes come from Cascina Francia in Serralunga. After 3-4 weeks of fermentation without any control, the wine is aged for 7 years in large barrels before being bottled. Monfortino is not only a star at Conterno, but represents everything Barolo stands for in the finest way. There is no one above or below Monfortino, and Roberto Coterno has shown that the traditionalists of Piedmont still have the upper hand when it comes to sublime quality.
