About the wine

Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana 2018 is a single vineyard Nebbiolo from Gattinara, one of the most prestigious appellations in Piedmont. The wine combines the finesse and elegance of great Barolos with the mineral freshness and acid structure that characterize the wines of northern Piedmont. How does Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana 2018 taste? 2018 was an excellent vintage in Alto Piemonte, where the balance between warm and cool nights created wines with finesse, structure and longevity. Color: Clear ruby red with orange nuances at the rim. Aroma: Intense and complex with notes of wild rose, red cherry, pomegranate, crushed stone and white pepper. Secondary aromas of dried herbs, licorice and light smoke. Flavor: Very precise and elegant with an excellent balance between fruit, acidity and tannins. Flavor notes of sour cherry, cranberry, blood orange, anise and wet stones. Finish: Long and mineral with persistent acidity and subtle spicy nuances.
Although the wine is ready to drink now, it will only get better over the next 10-20 years.

Producers Nervi Conterno

Nervi Conterno – World-class historic Gattinara

Nervi Conterno is one of the most respected producers in Gattinara DOCG, located in Alto Piemonte, north of Barolo and Barbaresco. Founded in 1906, the winery is the oldest in Gattinara and over the years has cemented itself as one of the leading producers of structured, mineral and long-lived Nebbiolo wines. In 2018, Nervi was acquired by Roberto Conterno, one of the most famous winemakers in Piedmont, known for Giacomo Conterno and the legendary Barolo Monfortino. This acquisition has led to a significant boost in quality, with a focus on traditional methods, precision and terroir expression.

🏡 The story of Nervi Conterno

Founded in 1906, Nervi has been one of the most recognized producers in Gattinara for over 100 years. The winery has always been known for its respect for terroir, classic vinification and the ability to produce Nebbiolo wines with enormous ageing potential. In 2018, Roberto Conterno took over the estate and has since honed the vinification to take Nervi to new heights. Conterno has invested in the winery’s vineyards and cellar, but without changing the traditional methods that make Gattinara unique.

🌍 Terroir – What makes Gattinara special?

Gattinara DOCG is located in northern Piedmont, at the foot of Monte Rosa, where the climate is cooler than in Barolo and Barbaresco. Here you’ll find some of the best conditions for Nebbiolo (called “Spanna” locally): Soil: Unique volcanic soil rich in minerals, giving the wines a distinctive acidity, structure and a stony, salty minerality.
Climate: Cooler than Barolo, resulting in wines with more finesse and freshness.
High altitude vineyards: Slow ripening and great aromatic complexity.
Gattinara is known for producing more delicate and elegant Nebbiolo wines than Barolo, but with high acidity and pronounced tannins that make them perfect for long aging.
