About the wine

Kruger Rumpf, Zweistrom Riesling 2022. Zweistrom (two streams) is the result of the meeting of two of Germany’s classic wine regions – Nahe and Rheinhessen. And the two rivers Nahe and Rhine. Standing on the highest point of Kruger Rumpf’s fields in Nahe and looking out over the area, the eye follows the Nahe River as it joins the Rhine to the north. From here you can see the Rheingau to the north, and to the west on the opposite bank of the Nahe lies Rheinhessen, with the large and mythical Große Lage mark Scharlachberg near the town of Bingen. This area has been home to great wines since Roman times and where Kruger Rumpf – in the days before various wine laws made it “illegal” to mix the different wine regions – harvested grapes on both sides of the Nahe River. The wine made from grapes harvested in both Nahe and Rheinhessen was highly recognized by Kruger Rumpf and has won many awards in the past. In this “Zweistrom” area, slate and quartz vines stand in stunningly situated fields. Kruger Rumpf, Zweistrom Riesling 2022 is made from grapes from Kruger Rumpf’s best fields in both areas and fermented in large barrels. You get the flinty, wet slatey and citrusy purity of the slatey fields in Nahe, and the deep minerality and power of the quartz on the Scharlachberg in Rheinhessen. Two areas in one wine – therefore “only” classified as Deutscher Landwein.

Producers

Wine production at Kruger-Rumpf can be traced back to the early 1700s. We are located in the northern part of Nahe, in the triangle between Nahe, Rheingau and Rheinhessen. Today, the winery is run by the young Georg Rumpf, who took over in 2007 and has brought the house into the top league of German wine. Since 1993, Kruger-Rumpf has been a member of VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), which is an association of Germany’s quality-oriented wineries with the right to use GG and 1G field designations. Wine is currently grown on 56 hectares and all according to organic principles. The largest part of the vineyards are located in Nahe with plots on fantastic Große Lage sites such as Pitterberg, Burgberg and Dautenflänzer and of course Große Lage Scharlachberg in Rheinhessen. Riesling accounts for the majority of the plantings, but Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are also grown. Georg Rumpf has a philosophy of as little intervention as possible – both in the field and in the cellar. The goal is to produce wines with elegance and “trink-freude” – the desire for another glass. Slate, loess and quartz are the typical soil types and all Kruger-Rumpf wines have a clear and pure minerality, a good balance between richness and fruitiness, clear grape character and a long ageing potential.
