About the wine

This wine is a masterpiece where the two distinctive vineyards of Brunate and Le Coste come together in a harmonious symphony that reflects Rinaldi’s deep understanding of the potential of the Nebbiolo grape. The 2004 vintage was also particularly favorable, giving wine lovers a Barolo that combines finesse, structure and ageing potential.

A deep garnet red with brick-colored nuances that reveal the age and development of the wine.

Complex and elegant with a bouquet of red cherries, dried roses, tar and truffles. Secondary notes of leather, tobacco and a subtle earthy minerality emerge as the wine oxygenates.

In the mouth, the wine is deeply structured with a precise balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. The tannins are still present, but are starting to become velvety, indicating the wine’s aging potential. The palate offers notes of cherry, licorice, dried herbs and a lingering finish with hints of spice and forest floor.

Vinification:

Brunate:

Located in La Morra, Brunate is known for its south-east facing slopes that give the Nebbiolo grape a rich and powerful profile. The soil, made up of calcareous clay and sand, contributes to the complexity and finesse of the wine.

The Coste:

A field in the Barolo commune with a southern exposure and calcareous soil. The grapes from here add elegance, freshness and a remarkable minerality to the wine.

When these two fields are combined, as in Barolo Brunate Le Coste 2004, you get a wine with both structure and finesse – a rare balance that is characteristic of Rinaldi.

Hand harvested: Grapes were carefully selected for optimal ripeness.

Long maceration: The must was macerated with the skins for up to 30 days to extract maximum color, tannin and flavor.

Aging: The wine was aged in large Slavonian oak botti for several years to develop complexity without being dominated by wood notes.

This meticulous process ensured that the wine remained true to both the character of the vintage and the distinctive terroir.

Giuseppe Rinaldi strongly represents traditional views on winemaking that have brought the winery into conflict with the Barolo consortium. Most significantly, the estate has always maintained that the best wines from Barolo have always been blends from multiple sites rather than the currently fashionable single-vineyard expression. Rinaldi’s most prominent wines were blends from Brunate and Le Coste, and the Cannubi and Ravera vineyards respectively and were labeled as such. However, Italian law passed in 2009 restricted that at least 85 percent of the fruit had to come from the named vineyard. Giuseppe Rinaldi opposed the changes. As a result of the law, Rinaldi is now making two new wines from the 2010 vintage: Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate, which uses the maximum 15% fruit from the Le Coste vineyard, and Tre Tine, a blend of grapes from Le Coste, Cannubi and Ravera. Rinaldi has avoided ‘new world’ trends such as the use of French barriques and shorter fermentation times. As a result, the wines require significant cellaring to mature their high tannins.
