About the wine

Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia 2017 is a textbook example of how traditional vinification and terroir can create a structured and age-worthy wine. As one of the most iconic producers in Piedmont, Roberto Conterno has continued the family philosophy of creating wines of extreme precision, depth and elegance.

The 2017 vintage was a challenging vintage in Barolo, but Conterno has managed to make a wine with excellent balance, power and potential for long ageing.

2017 was a warm and dry vintage, resulting in powerful wines with concentrated fruit and ripe tannins.

Color: Deep garnet red with incipient orange reflections.
Aroma: Enormously complex nose with notes of dried roses, dark cherries, tar, anise and truffle. Secondary aromas of smoked earth, spices and licorice.
Taste: Great concentration with an impressive balance of fruit, acidity and tannins. Flavors of dark berries, leather, blood orange, ferrous minerality and white pepper. The finish is long, powerful and elegant.

The story behind the name Conterno

The origins of its success are partly historical: the Conterno family has actually been producing wine for many generations since 1800. Subsequently, the more modern company was founded by Giacomo Conterno in 1900, with the first wines bottled in 1924.

During the 1930s, when most wine was still sold in bulk, Giacomo Conterno’s wines were already recognized among the most prestigious in Italy. His Barolo was so well known that before the advent of Italian DOC laws, the house’s flagship selection didn’t even carry the name Barolo on the bottles, but was simply sold as ‘Monfortino’.

Part of the fame of Giacomo Conterno’s wines is due to the extraordinary skills of his creator, Giovanni Conterno and now his son Roberto, who took over the reins and handed down the tradition with great humility, enthusiasm and passion.

In 2018, after a long collaboration, Roberto Conterno acquired the Nervi vineyard and its 27 hectares in the Gattinara area to embark on an exciting new adventure with Nebbiolo as its rootstock.
