About the wine

Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2016 DOCG.

Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco is arguably the most recognized and prestigious wine in the Langhe region, and it is the result of Angelo Gaja’s dedicated efforts to maximize the potential of one of the Barbaresco appellation’s most exclusive vineyards.

In the old days, the sunniest vineyards were known as “Sorì,” ensuring grapes of exceptional quality year after year.
San Lorenzo is a true cru vineyard, where the grapes are carefully selected both in the vineyard and later in the cellar.
After a thorough fermentation process, the wine is aged for 12 months in barrique and then a further 12 months in large oak barrels before finishing its maturation in the bottle.

Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2016 DOCG has exceptional finesse and refinement.
With a bright ruby red color, Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2016 DOCG unfolds a complex bouquet of floral aromas with notes of red currant, raspberry, morello cherry and hints of citrus, aromatic herbs and spices.
In the mouth it is elegant, harmonious and subtly nuanced, with a fresh and balsamic finish.

Gaja is perhaps the most well-known wine producer in all of Italy. The Gaja name is synonymous with Piedmont and is based in Barbaresco in northwest Italy and is still most strongly associated with Nebbiolo-based wines, though the company makes more wine in Tuscany than Piedmont. Gaja was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja with just 2 hectares of vineyards in Barbaresco and today they can claim 250 hectares in Piedmont. Each generation saw expansion and success, although Angelo Gaja, who took over full-time in 1970, is often credited with the success of the estate. He made sweeping changes to the vineyards and cellars, introducing the famous Barbaresco wines from a single vineyard the now famous Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi (now Langhe DOC wines). Gaja is famous for modernizing Piedmont, introducing international grape varieties and winemaking methods from Bordeaux and California. However, traditional elements remain, such as long macerations and the use of larger oak barrels/botties mixed with new barriques. Gaja caused a stir when it began blending a small amount of Barbera into all but two of its Barbaresco and Barolo wines. Angelo Gaja insisted that this was a traditional practice to correct acidity. Gaja’s expanded beyond Barbaresco, starting in 1988 with the acquisition of the Sperss winery in Barolo. In 1994, Gaja took over the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino of 27 hectares, followed by the Ca’ Marcanda estate in Bolgheri of 118 hectares.
