About the wine

Domaine Joseph Scharsch, GW (Pet Nat). Golden color, spicy floral notes and scents of aromatic stone fruits. On the palate, fine effervescence and vinosity, perfect dry wine. Gewürztraminer is a type of white wine grape variety known for its aromatic qualities and distinctive taste. It is primarily grown in the Alsace region of France, but it is also grown in various other wine regions around the world, including Germany, Austria, Italy and the USA. The name “Gewürztraminer” translates from German to “spice traminer”, indicating its aromatic spiciness. The wine made from Gewürztraminer grapes is typically rich, full-bodied and highly aromatic, often with notes of lychee, rose petals, honeysuckle and exotic spices. It can range from dry to sweet, with some versions exhibiting a slightly off-dry or even dessert wine-like sweetness. Due to its intense aromatics and bold flavors, Gewürztraminer is often enjoyed on its own as a sipping wine, but also pairs well with a variety of foods, including spicy Asian dishes, aromatic cheeses, poultry and seafood.

Pet Nat Gewürztraminer is a type of sparkling wine made from the Gewürztraminer grape variety using the Pétillant Naturel (Pet Nat) method. This method involves bottling the wine before the primary fermentation is complete, allowing the carbon dioxide produced by the natural sugars in the grapes to carbonate the wine. The result is a lightly sparkling wine with a slightly cloudy appearance due to minimal filtration. Gewürztraminer, known for its aromatic qualities with notes of lychee, rose petals and spices, can produce a distinctive and flavorful Pet Nat wine. It is often enjoyed as a fun and lively alternative to traditional sparkling wines.

Alsace in France has a place in most hearts and is particularly popular in Denmark and Scandinavia, where its culture and unique landscape have long been home to some of the world’s most respected winemakers. Dating back to 1755, Domaine Joseph Scharsch is no exception and has established itself as one of Wolxheim’s better-known names when it comes to wine production.

Domaine Joseph Scharsch is renowned for growing a number of the most famous grape varieties that thrive in Alsace’s unique climate and soils. This includes classic varieties such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, each expressing their unique characteristics in a sublime way under the expertise of Domaine Joseph Scharsch.

Domaine Joseph Scharsch geeks out on quality at every step of the production process. From the careful harvesting of the grapes to the carefully monitored fermentation and maturation process. At Domaine Joseph Scharsch, they emphasize craftsmanship and traditional techniques to create wines of the highest quality.

The vinifications are carried out in a spirit of continuity with the cultivation of the vines to reveal the best of each parcel in its wine. Fermentations are carried out exclusively with natural yeast on the grapes without the addition of commercial yeast. They are thus slower, less tumultuous and favor the complexity of the aromas. It is also one of the keys to allowing each vintage to acquire its own identity.

The wines are then aged and live off their lees until the following spring. This aging period will allow the wine to “grow” and its different components to blend together so that it can then age well over time.

Today, the Domaine has just over 12 hectares of vines, or 36 parcels, spread across the hillsides of the 6 surrounding villages. This diversity of terroirs makes it possible to grow 9 grape varieties, in locations where they fully express themselves.
