About the wine

Domaine Amirault, Le Clos Des Quarterons Vieilles Vignes 2018 is a well-balanced crisp and fruity wine made from 100% Cabernet Franc, which has an incredibly pleasant deep flavor. “Clos des Quarterons is above all a story of men and women, where we prioritize diversity and respect for living things. We are a team with different backgrounds, of complementary personalities.” The vines from Domaine Amirault where the wine comes from are on average 55 years old and come from different parcels in the vineyard’s fields. The soil is mainly gravel and clay with some limestone. The parcels are vinified separately to allow each parcel’s individual expression. It is clear in the glass that Domaine Amirault places great emphasis on reflecting the local terroir in the wine. According to the winemaker, the combination of organic and biodynamics is what helps to maintain the right balance in the wine. Domaine Amirault, Le Clos Des Quarterons Vieilles Vignes 2018 is certified organic since 2012 and biodynamic demeter certified since 2013.

Producers

Domaine Amirault is a family-owned winery where the current owners, Agnes and Xavier, are the sixth generation. The family has been growing wines for more than 180 years. The winery has 34 hectares in the Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil, Anjou and Touraine areas. Their wine cellar is built into a rock via a quarry and the cellar has a fixed temperature of 13 degrees all year round. The winery is organically certified and Demeter certified and cultivates according to biodynamic guidelines with respect for nature. They work with this philosophy because they believe that biodynamic standards help maintain the natural balance in the soil and in the wines. Considering the microbiological life in the farm is what enables both successful fermentations in the cellar and the creation of wine where it doesn’t require too much technological influence. Therefore, there is a lot of focus on this by the owners of the winery. For them, the biodynamic principles are much more than the wine itself. It is also a philosophy, a lifestyle; a virtuous system where man and nature are one and balance is achieved. The winery works according to the motto: “There is not man on one side and nature on the other – man is nature”, Pierre Rabhi, French author, farmer and environmentalist.

The area

Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil is an AOC in the central part of the Loire Valley. It is located in the AOC Bourgeuil red wine region, which is located on the right bank of the Loire River. The area is approximately 1,000 hectares in total, with Cabernet Franc being the primary grape grown, followed by small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Mainly red wines are produced in the area and the wines from the area are generally known to have a pleasant freshness and fruit acidity.
