About the wine

Château Mouton Rothschild, located in the heart of Pauillac, is known for its long history and exceptional wines. Originally classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the château achieved Premier Cru Classé status in 1973 in recognition of its exceptional quality and perseverance.

In the glass, the wine presents itself with a deep, dark garnet red color, indicating its concentration and intensity. The nose is complex and refined with aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant and cherry, complemented by notes of graphite, anise and a hint of blond tobacco. On the palate, the wine offers a smooth and full-bodied experience with precise tannins that support a harmonious balance between fruit and acidity. Hints of mint and mineral, smoky notes contribute to a long and noble finish.

A tradition for Château Mouton Rothschild is collaborating with famous artists to design the labels. For the 2020 vintage, the label was created by British painter Peter Doig. His work depicts a dream-like scene celebrating the growing and harvesting of wine, with references to artists such as Millet, van Gogh and Bacon who have also depicted farm workers in their work.

Historical Roots

The history of Château Mouton Rothschild begins in the Middle Ages, but the modern era of the castle can be traced to the 18th century. The original name was “Château Brane-Mouton,” and the property was purchased in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the famous Rothschild family.

Baron Nathaniel renamed the château Château Mouton Rothschild, beginning a journey to create one of the world’s most prestigious wines. The Rothschild family’s considerable resources and dedication ensured that the château became a beacon of innovation and quality in Bordeaux.

The classification in 1855

In 1855, Château Mouton Rothschild was classified as a Second Growth in the official Bordeaux classification. Despite the prestigious level, the family believed the château deserved the highest honor of Premier Cru Classé. This was finally achieved in 1973 after the tireless efforts of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Nathaniel’s descendant, who played a key role in modernizing the château and raising its status.

Vineyards: Terroir and Grape Varieties

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, an appellation in Bordeaux known for its gravelly soils and excellent drainage. These conditions, combined with the proximity of the Gironde River, create the ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, the cornerstone of the château’s wines.

Grapes and Planting

The vineyards of Château Mouton Rothschild extend over approximately 90 hectares and are planted with the following grape varieties:

Cabernet Sauvignon (80%): The dominant grape that provides structure, power and ageing potential.
Merlot (16%): Adds richness and softness to the wines.
Cabernet Franc (3%): Adds finesse and spice.
Petit Verdot (1%): A small but important component for depth and color.

The old vines, often over 40 years old, ensure low yields and high concentration in the grapes.

Sustainable Cultivation

The castle is deeply committed to sustainable practices. They work with precision agriculture to reduce environmental impact, including the use of organic methods for disease control and soil care. At the same time, they closely monitor each vine to ensure optimal quality in each vintage.

Production: From Field to Bottle

Château Mouton Rothschild is known for its innovative approach to winemaking. Every step of the process, from harvest to bottling, is carried out with care.

Hand picking
Harvesting is done manually to ensure that only the best grapes are used. The grapes are then sorted both in the field and at the winery, guaranteeing top quality.

Vinification and Aging
Fermentation: The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and oak vats to preserve their natural aromas and structure.
Aging: The wines are aged in new French oak barrels for up to 18 months. This method adds complex aromas such as vanilla, smoke and spice while enhancing the structure and depth of the wine.

A Family Heritage

For generations, the Rothschild family has left their mark on Château Mouton Rothschild. Baron Philippe de Rothschild was a visionary leader who introduced pioneering practices such as bottling the wines at the château – an unusual practice in Bordeaux at the time.

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, his daughter, continued the legacy by promoting the castle’s global reputation and strengthening the connection between art and wine through their unique labels designed by famous artists.
